Biographical NoteMs. Miller was an active leader in the women's rights movement in Dallas, Texas and elsewhere during the 1970s. She was active in establishing the Dallas Commission on the Status of Women, serving as its vice-chairman. As a leader of the group Women for Change, she petitioned the city of Dallas for its formation. She served as Dallas coordinator of Texans for ERA, helping lead Texas to ratify the amendment (though the amendment later failed to be ratified by three quarters of the U.S. states). Ms. Miller was also active in local politics, serving on various campaigns such as Annette Strauss' mayoral bid. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and ContentsThis collection is divided into five series: Organizations, Meeting/Conference/Seminars, Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), General Information Topics and Public Relations/Political Campaigns. It includes papers, brochures, minutes, and clippings pertaining to Ms. Miller's involvement in the women's movement. Collection includes biographies of Dallas civic leader Maura McNeil, Patricia Abbitt Hill, and Texas State Representative Frances Farenthold. Ms. McNeil's biography is found in the folder titled "McNeil's speech to Wellesley, 1977". Ms. Farenthold's biography is found in the folder titled "Political Seminar for Women 1/17/72". Approximately seven issues of Equal Times are included and the collection includes Ms. Miller's resume dated July 1975. Also included is Shirley Miller's work as Public Relations Manager during Annette Strauss' campaign for mayor in 1987. Many aspects of the women's movement in Dallas are covered in clippings and information files such as child care, the displaced homemaker's bill, divorce, and women and credit.
