Powell Hotel & Court, the first black-owned hotel in Dallas, at 3115 State Street. Among the many dignitaries who stayed the at Powell during its heyday of the 1930s and 1940s were composer Duke Ellington, boxer Joe Louis, jazz pianist Thomas "Fats" Waller, Southern University president Felton Clark, and trumpeter Louis Armstrong. The hotel closed in 1970 and burned down in 1975.
