Within the Hamon Oil and Gas Resource Center, the library user will find several sources of valuable reference information, including dictionaries; directories; atlases and maps; sources of prices, statistics, and forecasts; and other reference sources (e.g. technical handbooks, state regulatory information). This Webpage will be also be used to feature representative new titles as they are added to the collection, and to identify resources that might be useful for research related to North Texas's Barnett Shale formation.

Within the Hamon Center Reference section the library user will find an extensive collection of recent directories. Significant titles include:

Atlases/Maps

The Hamon Oil and Gas Resource Center includes a small collection of maps and atlases relevant to the energy industry. Potentially relevant map materials may also be found within other collections at the Central Library, including mineral maps residing in the Government Division on the 6th floor. Prices, Statistics, and Forecasts

The Hamon Oil and Gas Resource Center offers the researcher several sources that provide current and historical prices, statistics, and forecast data for petroleum and other energy categories. Noteworthy sources include:

  • International Petroleum Encyclopedia

    Yearly compendium of worldwide news, statistics, and atlas data, with key statistics listed for individual countries including refining capacity, production, oil/condensate reserves, and natural gas reserves.
  • Oil and Gas Journal Databook
    338.2728 O39
    Annual publication providing an industry forecast and review; miscellaneous reports including petrochemical, gas processing, pipeline economics, refining, production, construction, drilling, and catalyst reports; and rig count statistics.
  • Platt’s Oil Price Handbook and Oilmanac
    338.23 P719
    Comprehensive source of historical price data. The Hamon Center carries annual issues for most years for the time period 1955 – 1998 (see the periodical Platts Oilgram Price Report for more recent price data).
  • Worldwide Petroleum Industry Outlook
    338.27282 O39
    Covers outlook for supply and demand; review and outlook for capital expenditures; exploration, drilling, and production; refining and petrochemicals; transportation; natural gas; and other energy sources.

    Recent Annual Meeting Papers for the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association (NPRA) are available online in the Hamon Center.
  • SPE/IADC Drilling Conference

    Recent proceedings for the Drilling Conference and several other Society of Petroleum Engineer (SPE) symposiums are available online in the Hamon Center.

  • Studies in Early Petroleum History

    Traces the history of petroleum from the times of its earliest known use through the middle of the nineteenth century.
  • Texas Oil and Gas Since 1543

    Details the history of petroleum in Texas from 1543 to 1937, including discussion of the economic importance of the industry to the state as well as separate treatments of East Texas, Gulf Coast, North Texas, Panhandle, Southwest Texas, and West Texas regions.

Barnett Shale Research

The Hamon Oil and Gas Resource Center provides access to several reference resources that may be used to find information relevant to the Barnett Shale:

  • PI/D Dwights Plus Drilling Wire
    Weekly reports of well drilling progress for counties in Texas Railroad Commission District 9 ("North Texas Report,") Districts 5 and 6 ("East Texas Report,") and District 7B ("West Central Texas Report.")
  • Property and lease ownership maps
    Coverage includes the following counties: Tobin Lease Summary Maps - Denton, Jack, Palo Pinto, Parker, Wise; Tobin Ownership Summary Maps - Johnson, Tarrant; Historical Tobin Heydrick's maps - Bosque, Clay, Comanche, Cooke, Coryell, Denton, Eastland, Erath, Hood, Jack, Johnson, Montague, Palo Pinto, Parker, Somervelle, Stephens, Tarrant, Wise, Young; Historical Tobin Shelf maps - Hamilton.
  • U.S. Lease Price Report
    Market prices by county for bonus, royalty, rental, and lease term. Barnett Shale counties fall within the "Region 3 East Texas" and "Region 5 West Texas" sections of the report.

The Hamon Center also provides access to reference sources that periodically include articles on Barnett Shale topics. Examples include:

  • AAPG Bulletin
    The April 2007 issue of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) professional journal is devoted entirely to the Barnett Shale.
  • SPE Conference Proceedings
    Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Conference and Symposium Proceedings, available electronically in the Hamon Center, include several technical papers related to fracturing and other technologies used in the Barnett Shale.

Dallas Public Library's Business & Technology Division, which houses the Hamon Oil and Gas Resource Center, maintains a separate collection of business periodicals. Publications that may include articles on Barnett Shale topics include:

  • Fort Worth Business Press
    This local business publication for Dallas's neighbor to the west contains numerous articles on issues related to the impact of Barnett Shale development on Fort Worth and surrounding area.
