
In addition to its extensive bibliographic collections, the
J. Erik Jonsson Central Library is is home to art and artifacts
ranging from a superb collection of Navajo blankets to a
copy of The Declaration of Independence from its first printing.
The Central Library collections include magazines and journals,
national and local newspapers, DVD's, music CD's and more.
In order to reserve a staff- or docent-guided tour of the
Central Library, please contact us a minimum of 4 weeks
prior to the tour date. (School groups should make transportation
arrangements prior to contacting the library.) Options include:
- General Tour
This tour gives a general overview of the Dallas Public
Library, more specifically the J. Erik Jonsson Central
Library. The tour highlights general information and
exhibits housed at the Central location. Estimated tour
time: 1 hour.
- User Education Tour
This tour is more hands-on for our patrons who are in
secondary school or attend an institution of higher
learning. User Ed Tours give a general overview of the
library and exhibits, but also teach patrons how to
use the library system for research, searching through
the catalogues, and the use of microfilm. Patrons also
learn how to use the online databases. Estimated tour
time: 1 hour 30 minutes.
- Exhibits Tour
Focusing on the many treasures on exhibit in the J.
Erik Jonsson Library, this tour takes patrons on a tour
of artwork, rare books, and displays found in the Central
Library. Estimated tour time: 45 minutes.

Children's Center
- Children's Center Tour
Focusing on the wonderful Children's Center of the J.
Erik Jonsson Central Library, this is tailored for patrons
age birth to 14. This tour caters to a child's fancy
of storytime, puppet shows, movies, an online center,
and more. This tour also teaches young children how
to use the library system. Estimated tour time: 45 minutes.
